Co-Leader of QuantumBlack Japan; helps clients achieve impact and innovation through advanced analytics at scale

Matt is a Co-Leader of QuantumBlack, a McKinsey company, in Japan, which includes the launch, growth, and operation of the team. Prior to leading QuantumBlack, Matt spent over eight years helping lead a Silicon Valley based big-data analytics start-up, scaling it across the United States, Europe, and Japan, and oversaw its acquisition by a large database company in 2014. In total, Matt has spent five years in Japan helping clients achieve scaled impact through analytics.

Matt’s experience includes leading some of the world’s largest deployments of big data and advanced-analytics technologies across a variety of industries including pharmaceutical, medical-device technology, automotive, and consumer-packaged-goods clients.

Examples of his recent work include the following:

  • using real-world data to identify treatment patterns via machine learning to uncover opportunities to better treat patients in Japan
  • leading omnichannel transformations across Asia and in Japan for global pharmaceutical organizations through the use of machine-learning applications to optimize customer engagement
  • defining a set of machine-learning-enabled use cases for a Japanese pharmaceutical organization to improve drug discovery and R&D functions
  • building capabilities and executing campaigns for a Japanese cosmetics organization through agile marketing and advanced analytics
  • designing an analytics transformation for a commercial truck manufacturer including the use of sensor data at scale to improve operations as well as customer recommendations

Matt holds a BA from Stanford University and is certified in Japanese from the JLPT N3 (Japanese language proficiency test) exam. When he is not working on big data and advanced analytics, he enjoys a competitive round of pub trivia or spending time with his wife and son.
